Registries are long. The list of things you need on day one is not.

    Sleep

    • Crib with a firm, well-fitting mattress.
    • Three fitted crib sheets — one on, one in the wash, one in the closet. This is the number every parent lands on.
    • A waterproof mattress protector under the sheet.
    • Two wearable blankets or sleep sacks.

    Changing

    • Changing pad plus two or three covers.
    • A caddy or basket that keeps diapers, wipes and cream within one arm's reach.

    Feeding

    • A nursing pillow — worth having whether you nurse or bottle feed.
    • Six or more muslin burp cloths. You will not regret over-buying here.

    The room

    • Blackout curtain panels.
    • A comfortable chair you can fall asleep in.
    • A hamper you can carry with one arm.
    • Two lightweight cotton muslin blankets for stroller, car seat and floor time.

    Skip for now

Crib bumpers (never safe), a wipe warmer, shoes, newborn-size clothing in bulk, and any decorative pillow that is going to sit in the crib. Buy the quilt if you love it — just plan for it to live on the glider for the first year.
