Safe Sleep Basics: How to Set Up the Crib

A crib that is safe is also the simplest crib to make. Here is exactly what goes in, what stays out, and where the pretty pieces belong.

New parents are often surprised by how little belongs in a crib. The safest setup is also the easiest one to reproduce at 3am.

    What goes in the crib

    • A firm, flat crib mattress that fits snugly — no more than two fingers between mattress and frame.
    • One fitted crib sheet, sized for that mattress, pulled taut with no loose fabric.
    • Your baby, on their back, for every sleep.

What stays out for the first 12 months

    • Pillows and pillow-like plush, including decorative throw pillows.
    • Quilts, comforters, loose blankets and sheepskins.
    • Crib bumpers of any kind.
    • Toys, plush animals and positioners.

A wearable blanket or sleep sack replaces loose bedding for warmth. Dress your baby in one more layer than you would wear comfortably, and keep the room cool.

Then where do the quilt and pillow go?

They still earn their place in the room — over the glider, folded on an open shelf, layered on a toddler bed later. Our multi-piece sets are built that way on purpose: the crib pieces are crib-safe, and the decorative pieces are decorative.

    Rail guards

Crib rail guards protect the rail from teething once your baby is pulling to stand. They are a rail cover, not bedding — check the fit against your specific rail and keep ties short and secure on the outside of the crib.

    Warnings matter

Decorative pillows carry a suffocation warning for a reason. Never place them in a crib, bassinet or sleep space with an infant.
